Latest Updates:
The Union Budget 2025-26, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, 2025, introduces significant tax reforms aimed at bolstering the middle class and stimulating economic growth. Here are the key tax highlights:
1. Personal Income Tax Reforms:
Increased Tax Exemption Limit: Individuals with an annual income up to ₹12 lakh will now pay zero income tax under the new tax regime. This move is designed to enhance disposable income and boost household consumption.
Revised Tax Slabs: The new tax structure has been adjusted to benefit those earning up to ₹24 lakh. For instance, income between ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh is taxed at 5%, ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh at 10%, ₹12 lakh to ₹16 lakh at 15%, ₹16 lakh to ₹20 lakh at 20%, ₹20 lakh to ₹24 lakh at 25%, and income above ₹24 lakh at 30%.
Standard Deduction Increase: The standard deduction for salaried individuals has been raised from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000, further reducing taxable income.
2. Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS) Adjustments:
Higher TDS Limits: The TDS limit on interest income for senior citizens has been doubled from ₹50,000 to ₹1 lakh. Additionally, the annual TDS threshold on rental income has increased from ₹2.4 lakh to ₹6 lakh.
TCS on Foreign Remittances: The threshold for TCS under the Liberalized Remittance Scheme has been raised to ₹10 lakh from the previous ₹7 lakh, aiming to reduce the tax burden on frequent international transactions.
3. Corporate and Business Taxation:
Presumptive Taxation for Non-Resident Service Providers: A new presumptive tax regime has been introduced for non-resident service providers in the electronics manufacturing sector, simplifying tax compliance and encouraging foreign participation.
Incentives for Startups and MSMEs: The budget proposes various incentives and funds to support startups and small firms, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.
